Christine Amo
President

Portland, Oregon: I have loved working with young chldren throughout my life.  I spent 30 years as a teacher of Kindergarten and primary aged children in Portland, Oregon before retiring to spend my winters in Puerto Vallarta 7 years ago.  I am an active advocate for the needs of children both in the United States and in Mexico, and have a doctorate degree in Curriculum and Instruction for Young Children.  I treasure my time at the Refugio and Pasitos, and have been learning a great deal from these amazing children.

Secretary-Treasurer

Portland, Oregon: What can I say?  My college friend Chris Amo thought I needed something more to do, so she asked my husband Bill and me to help create the Foundation.  Presently, I am working as an administrator for Portland (Oregon) Public Schools.  We built a house in Vallarta 12 years ago.  Chris knows I can?t just ?sit around.?  The Foundation is a way for me to give back to the Mexican people.  Bill is a nice complement to our Board as he is a former CPA partner, and now a practicing tax attorney - what luck for us!

Anne-Marie Haynes
Director

Toronto, Ontario: Although I had visited the Refugio many times, in January 2005 I met Chris Amo and suddenly my visits to the Refugio were much more connected.  Through her I got to know the children in a much different way and I knew after a short while that this is where I wanted to put my volunteer efforts.  My background is in nursing so one of my main concerns is the health of the children, but to be totally honest it is such a wonderful experience for me to sit at one of the little picnic tables in front of the square rocking one of the babies, and playing with all the other children at the same time.  I am just waiting for the day when I can enjoy it for a longer period of time.  Our Canadian foundation is now recognized by Revenue Canada.  http://www.canadianchildrensshelterofhope.org/

Director

Puerto Vallarta, Jalisco, Mexico: I am from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico.  I have lived in Puerto Vallarta for the past 15 years.  Presently I am the Refugio administrator.  Formerly was a teacher of young children at the American School in Puerto Vallarta.  Being a teacher and being with children is what I most like.  I have also worked with homeless children and adults.  When I give it is like a drop of water in the desert, but to help others is to me an honor and a privilege.  This is what I want to do.  I am always at your service.

Constance Vincent
Director

Menlo Park, California: One of my earliest goals in life was to become a child psychologist and help children.  Instead, my path led to a Ph.D.  in Developmental Psychology.  When I began to teach at the university level, I started a daycare center on campus where my students in Child Psych.  could observe young children.  Perhaps because I was involved with children both professionally and with my own young family, my volunteer activities for a long time were in many other directions.  It wasn?t until my husband Ed and I retired a few years ago and began spending our winters in Puerto Vallarta (after 30 years of vacationing here), that I discovered a place to volunteer which really excites me.  At the Refugio, I have the opportunity to fulfill my very early goal--to do something to help children--and I am beginning to enjoy retirement much, much more.
